PROJECT BACKGROUND
The Dinaric Alps – one of Europe’s least explored mountain ranges – is a mountain corridor running through the heart of the Western Balkans. The Via Dinarica project was launched in 2010 with the aim of promoting and developing tourism in the Western Balkans, and since then, its concept has grown from an idea and a grassroots initiative into a market-oriented regional tourism product which is constantly developing.
The trail, which spans nearly 2000 km, connects the countries and communities of Dinaric Alps by spotlighting the region’s common thread – its landscape – as well as its diverse culture.
In 2014, American magazine Outside named the Via Dinarica “The Best New Trail of the Year”, Paste magazine’s best trekking path in 2015, a 2016 must-see by both Wanderlust magazine and The Guardian, and National Geographic Traveler‘s “Best of the World” destination for 2017
Context
NaturKosovo mainly addresses the territory and the communities of Via Dinarica in Kosovo, located in the north-western part of the country, including the municipalities of Peja, Decan, Junik, and the National Park Bjeshkët e Nemuna. At the same time, the project is meant to have an impact at national level and to benefit also other mountain areas and communities of Kosovo.
The Kosovo stretch of the Via Dinarica extends for roughly 120 km through the Accursed Mountains National Park, in Western Kosovo. This trail is composed of seven sections of medium difficulty with breath-taking views, high peaks and many mountain springs along a marked foot path.
