PROJECT BACKGROUND
Beit Jala is only 2 km far from the city of Bethlehem and 10 km far from Jerusalem. In Beit Jala there are about 15,670 Palestinian Christians and Muslims who live together in harmony, respect and cooperation, representing a great example of coexistence between religions. Beit Jala is known for the variety of educational and health facilities, considered to be an excellence in Palestine, which belong to different confessions and which serve its citizens, such as those of the nearby cities of Bethlehem, Beit Sahour, Wallaje and nearby villages and refugee camps.
The main problems that the project tackle are:
- Lack of green public spaces usable by citizens in the city of Beit Jala.
- Difficulty in accessing basic public services such as education, due to the containment measures due to Covid-19.
- Loss of income by young people and local citizens due to the current health emergency and the already precarious previous employment situation.
- Weak synergy between the actors of the public (Municipality) and civil society

GOAL
The general objective of the project is to contribute to improving the quality of services and urban public spaces of Beit Jala, encouraging an improvement of health conditions, participation and leading role of citizens, especially young people and children.
Specifically, the project aims at the rehabilitation of an urban green space located in Area A, owned by the Municipality of Beit Jala, in order to promote citizen participation, the promotion of healthy and sustainable lifestyles, and the strengthening of Beit Jala in terms of participatory policy planning skills, enhancing the role and skills of young people.
ACTIVITIES
The need to provide the municipality of Beit Jala with a urban green space became more evident with the lockdown due to the Covid19 pandemic. The open and public space – especially in the event of any new restrictions – will become a place for socialization and capable of guaranteeing distance and safety, but at the same time it will be a space offered to all citizens who want to enjoy outdoor spaces.
The main activities are divided into 5 groups:
- Coordination
Creation of the Coordination Committee. Monitoring and Evaluation.
- Awareness raising in Emilia Romagna
ReMida Day event in Reggio Emilia. Implementation of events (online or offline) on geopolitics dynamics regarding Middle East countries with national experts. CineForum of Palestinian movies.
- Training and exchange of good practices between municipalities
