THE HONEY ROAD:
TRAINING AND
EQUIPMENT FOR
SMALL BEEKEEPERS
IN SAPA

Obiettivi - Progetto

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The Project originates from the cooperation established by RTM with the Diocese of Sapa in 2012, within the broader framework of the twinning that for over three decades has tied the Diocese of Reggio Emilia-Guastalla with the local Albanian community.
In 2014 RTM has started a programme to support agricultural and rural development in Northern Albania; through this new Project we aim at resuming and enhancing the good practices in training and management developed by RTM and Caritas Diocese of Sapa in previous joint interventions in the sector.

Context

The intervention is implemented in the Diocese of Sapa (Northern Albania), specifically in two neighbouring rural areas:

  • The mountain area of Puka and Fushe Arrez
  • Zadrima Plain (Vau Dejes)

Both areas are marked by a strong cultural identity. Agriculture is the predominant economic activity and is based on the traditional small family business, which is characterised by structural difficulties in obtaining an adequate income. These characteristics offer no prospects for young people, encourage emigration and worsen the condition of women, on whom much of the domestic and agricultural work falls. Agricultural production is destined for self-consumption and informal trade.
One of the area’s leading products is honey (wildflower, chestnut and thyme being the most renowned). Beekeeping provides an important source of income for these communities, that to this day rely heavily on traditional agriculture. The production and sale of honey, beeswax, propolis and other bee products helps to improve the living standards of beekeepers and their families, making them less vulnerable to fluctuations in agricultural markets and weather conditions, and helps to counter the growth of rural unemployment by generating employment opportunities.
Beekeeping and beehives also contribute to environmental sustainability and regeneration by promoting healthy ecosystems and local biodiversity.

GOAL

Specifically, the project aims at increasing the productivity and added value achieved by family-run farms operating in the high-potential sector of beekeeping in disadvantaged areas of the Diocese of Sapa.

ACTIVITIES

  • Vocational training in beekeeping and provision of equipment for family farms in mountain areas (advanced level).

The activities are aimed at 20 family farms which are already active in the beekeeping sector. These are families with a well-established tradition in beekeeping and a firm size that already allows them to access the market.

The training aims to increase their skills in both primary production and processing. Technicians from the involved municipalities and AgroPuka will also be invited to attend the training sessions in order to broaden the spill-over effect of the benefits generated by the training.

Farms will be provided with advanced beekeeping equipment in order to increase production qualitatively and quantitatively.

  • Vocational training in beekeeping and provision of equipment for family farms in the lowland area (basic level).

The activities are aimed at 18 families living in the lowland area, which also have an agricultural vocation but possess limited or no previous experience in beekeeping.

The training aims at providing basic skills in both primary production and processing. The training programme consists of an initial preparatory phase, the training courses per se and a subsequent technical assistance phase.

The provision of basic equipment to jump-start the farms’ beekeeping operations is also expected.
